GK Du Jour: Wimbledon in Full Swing

Inspired by this article in Vanity Fair, we're taking a look at some tips on Wimbledon, the world's oldest and most prestigious tennis tournament.

The Championships

Wimbledon has been held in London since 1877 and is the only tennis tournament to still be played on grass, paying tribute to where the term “lawn grass” originated when the sport was created.

Throughout the two-week duration of this year's tournament, 675 tennis matches will be played across 19 courts. The most popular events are the men’s and women’s singles, with headliners including Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Ash Barty, and Angelique Kerber.

A Seat at the Match

Being such a sought-after event to attend, there are many ways to acquire tickets. For United Kingdom residents, one can apply for tickets through a lottery and randomly be selected for tickets.

If you are not a United Kingdom citizen or don’t get tickets through the ballot, there are other options like debentures, resale options, or the queue.

Debentures are five-year passes to Wimbledon that get the most prestigious seats in the Main Court and Court 1 for each day of the Championships. Debenture owners can sell their tickets per day if they cannot attend, but resale users don’t get all the same benefits as the owners do.

The legendary Wimbledon queue is a long-standing tradition, put on hold due to social distancing but will be back in 2022. When it returns, fans can wait in line, camping out in a designated area overnight, for a limited number of seats for Centre Court, No 1 and 2 that are sold off on the morning of play.

Staying in Style

Your stay in London is a highlight of enjoying Wimbledon matches. The Connaught Hotel, located in Mayfair, which is approximately a 30-minute drive from Wimbledon, was Grace Kelly’s personal London favorite. Stay here in true Grace Kelly style and enjoy the classic yet contemporary finishes of the five-star hotel. The hotel is dedicated to fine art, so while you are watching tennis during the day, you can return to enjoy the art scene at night. Many other royals stayed here throughout their lives, French President General Charles De Gaulle was a resident, as well as many of Queen Victoria’s family.

Dress Code

The dress code is casual but smart for Wimbledon, as you’ll want to be comfortable outside walking from court to court, but being mindful that you might rub shoulders with celebrities and other well-known names.

But, if you’re planning to hit the court yourself and looking for a Wimbledon-inspired look, this green dress, inspired by Grace Kelly’s Monte-Carlo Country Club look is a good go-to (Bonus: It’s made by a sustainable British brand!). Via Vanity Fair
